From Sustainability to Speed: Breaking Down the Features of The New BMW i5

The new BMW 5 Series Saloon is more vibrant than ever before, boasting an array of digital advances and an all-electric option for the first time. Not only does it represent state-of-the-art tech and a sporty, refined look that have made it the world’s top business saloon, but it has also deepened its dedication to sustainability with a dramatic reduction in emissions.

What’s New?

  • Eighth generation 5 series revealed. Now available with a fully electric powertrain in the i5
  • The new i5 to be available in two variants, the i5 eDrive 40 and the i5 M60 Xdrive
  • High levels of in-car technology with the addition of the interaction bar and BMW Curved Display
  • In-car gaming with AirConsole premieres in the new BMW 5 Series
  • Enjoy a claimed range of up to 361 miles on a single charge
  • The new i5 is longer to provide more comfort and space in the back.

Exceptional Design

The exterior of the all-electric BMW i5 M60 xDrive from BMW M GmbH speaks volumes: its proportions interpret the sporty elegance of a BMW 5 Series Saloon in the company’s current design language. This performance model also comes with specific features that demonstrate its impressive athletic capability.

The new model is larger than its predecessor, having grown 97mm to 5,06mm in length, 32mm to 1,900mm in width and 36mm to 1,515m in height. Additionally, it has a 20mm extended wheelbase of 2,995mm for improved seating comfort in the back – and an overall enhanced road presence.

New Interior

The latest generation BMW 5 Series marks several firsts for the iconic saloon, starting with its pure-electric drivetrain. The car also boasts Veganza upholstery as standard from launch, sprucing up the seats, dashboard and door panels. A real eye catcher is the BMW Interaction Bar that made its debut in the 7 Series and comes with the new 5 Series. For the first time ever, a panoramic roof is available to choose on this model while AI-driven servicing notifications and in-car gaming take digital experience to a whole new level.

The new BMW 5 Series Saloon has generous proportions, up-to-date technological features and acoustic comfort. High-quality materials are skilfully crafted and digital services are provided in abundance. The fully digital BMW Curved Display is at the centre of the interior redesign and joined by several other innovations such as the BMW Interaction Bar, My Modes for customised driving and inside experience, as well as a new gear selector switch on the central console.

Ultimate Performance

At launch, the electric i5 will be available in two versions: the rear-wheel-drive eDrive40 and the four-wheel-drive M60 xDrive. The eDrive40 has a single 335bhp motor giving it an acceleration of 0-62mph in 6.0 seconds and a top speed of 120mph. The M60 xDrive combines a rear motor with an additional 256bhp front one to achieve 593bhp, resulting in an impressive 0-62mph time of 3.8 seconds and top speed of 143mph. Both models are furnished with an 81.2kWh battery giving the eDrive40 a range of up to 362 miles, while the M60 xDrive can reach up to 321 miles between charges.

The BMW i5 offers drivers the latest in fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology with its high-voltage battery. Composed of four modules containing 72 cells each and three modules with 12 cells, it is designed to be as flat as possible and sits beneath the car to save space. It has an impressive energy content of 81.2 kWh, with a range of 282 – 320 miles for the M60 xDrive variant and 296 – 362 for the eDrive40 model. Additionally, adaptive recuperation helps keep or regain energy using data from navigation systems and driver assistance technologies; you can choose from high, medium or low recuperation levels via BMW iDrive. Furthermore, when driving in My Mode EFFICIENT mode you can enjoy up to 25 percent extra range by limiting power output and speed along with reduced comfort functions.

Intelligent Charging

The BMW i5’s Combined Charging Unit (CCU) allows for AC charging up to 11kW as standard, or up to 22kW (standard on the i5 M60 xDrive); it also supports DC charging up to a whopping 205kW, enabling an increase of charge from 10-80% in just 30 minutes. Taking it even further, a DC fast-charging station can provide a 97 mile range in just 10 minutes under the same conditions. Refinements like advanced charging software enhance efficiency, adjusting power delivery instead of using the staircase curve; plus, this model is the first utilising waste heat generated by the electric motors to regulate battery temperature prior to a charging station – pre-conditioning can be set manually or automatically via navigation system.
