The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been the gold standard for executive transport for years. With the unveiling of the 2024 model, we aim to dissect its newest features, while contrasting it to its lineage and European rivals such as the Audi A6 and BMW 5-series.
While the Mercedes badge has always stood for prestige, the likes of Audi and BMW are rapidly narrowing that perception gap. The new E-Class showcases an elegant blend of the past and future. It certainly stands out compared to the Audi A6 that follows a more restrained design language. The new design carries forward from the swooping lines and adds new sporty touches. The front of the new car notably integrates the headlights with the grille in a distinct panel that stands out from the rest of the vehicle. While this design was previously featured in Mercedes’ EQ series like the EQC, it’s a debut for their vehicles that still run on traditional fuel.
The E350’s turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, supported by a 23-hp electric motor, cumulatively offers 255 horsepower. The more robust E450 variant pushes this to 375 horsepower with its inline-six engine. However, while the hybrid component promises reduced turbo lag, we’ve yet to see if this completely eliminates the common gripes of delayed power delivery that hybrids sometimes face. First impressions of the E450 indicate a rather eager throttle, even in Comfort mode, which can be unsettling for those preferring a gradual acceleration. And while the drive modes from Sport to Eco offer adaptability, the ‘Progressive Sport Sound’ – essentially a synthetic engine roar – might feel gimmicky to purists.
Inside, the cabin spells luxury, but also showcases some concerns. The tech-rich environment leans heavily on digital interfaces, borrowing heavily from the ‘Hyperscreen’ design of other models. While undoubtedly modern, the interface may feel overwhelming and less intuitive for users who prefer tactile controls.
The 2024 model has slightly expanded dimensions, especially in the rear. Mercedes also offers long wheel base versions of the E class in some markets. The boot does make a generous leap from 370 litres to 538 litres, which is more than enough to carry suitcases for that airport trip.
Mercedes-Benz, renowned for its commitment to safety advancements, ensures that the latest E-Class upholds this legacy by incorporating state-of-the-art safety features, both passive and active. The standard safety provisions comprise:
For the 2024 release of the E-Class, Mercedes seems to be taking a fresh approach. Unlike earlier launches where the high-performance AMG version would come out after the regular variant, this time, the AMG is anticipated to launch simultaneously with the standard versions. Furthermore, as the model evolves, an electric version is expected to join the roster, boasting a range exceeding 300 miles on a single charge and featuring quick charging capabilities.
