2024 Hyundai Santa Fe: A Fresh Spin on an Established Classic

Hyundai’s back with the latest version of its well-known SUV, the Santa Fe. A favorite among families for over two decades, the 2024 model brings a fresh face and new features to the table. From its redesigned exterior to updated engine options and a revamped interior, Hyundai aims to catch the eyes of both loyal fans and newcomers. Let’s dive into what the new Santa Fe has to offer and help you figure out if it’s the right ride for you.

What’s New?

This new model hits showrooms in early 2024, but hot on its heels is Kia’s refreshed Sorento. The Santa Fe continues to embrace hybrid tech, offering both hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. The hybrid features a zippy 1.6-liter turbocharged engine combined with electric support, boasting 178bhp and a 0-62mph sprint in 9.5 seconds. As for efficiency? Hyundai promises an average of 43.8mpg.

The plug-in version is still under wraps, but we’re hoping for a bigger battery than the preceding model’s 13.8kWh. And while it may be slightly slower, taking 0.62mph in 9.1 seconds, we’re betting on an improved electric range.

Visually, the Santa Fe’s design channels some cues from Hyundai’s electric Ioniq 7 – assertive front design, angular details, and an eye-catching full-width LED light bar. The stretch in the wheelbase doesn’t just add to its road dominance but also generously boosts interior space.

Exterior Design

Right off the bat, the Santa Fe’s front fascia is a showstopper. The ‘H-shaped’ LED motifs in the headlights are a fresh innovation, serving as a distinct brand signature. Paired with the full-width LED light bar, it gives the vehicle a modern and electrifying presence, marking it clearly as a product of the new decade. The large, muscular wheel arch extensions and a stretched wheelbase contribute to a more assertive road stance, making it clear that Hyundai is attempting to blend ruggedness with contemporary flair.
Moving to the back, Hyundai’s decision to start with the tailgate design has resulted in a pragmatic boot space. With a 725-litre capacity and a wider opening, it’s clear that practicality wasn’t sacrificed for style. The LED lighting strip wrapping the rear brings coherence to the overall design.

Interior and Tech

If the exterior of the new Santa Fe is a statement on the streets, the interior is a tech-laden haven designed for today’s digital age. Hyundai has indeed upped the ante, but how does the blend of luxury, tech, and space fare under scrutiny?

Taking center stage is the panoramic curved display, harmoniously integrating a 12.3-inch digital driver display with the infotainment screen. This seamless layout offers a modern, almost sci-fi-esque feel to the cockpit, placing crucial information and entertainment at the driver’s fingertips. The Santa Fe promises an opulent experience with Nappa leather seats, wood-patterned garnishes, and delicate embroidery. Combined with a range of interior color schemes, like the sophisticated Pecan Brown and the bold Supersonic Grey.

While the dual screen setup is visually striking, potential buyers who prefer distinct separation between driver information and entertainment might find it less intuitive. The continuous screen might also pose potential glare issues during certain times of the day, affecting visibility.

Space and Practicality

Hyundai’s decision to stretch the wheelbase isn’t just a design choice – it translates into tangible benefits inside. Notably, an increased second-row legroom and generous headspace even in the third row should ensure comfort during longer rides. However, as always, prospective buyers should test out the third row to ascertain its comfort for adults on extended trips.

Engine options

Starting with the hybrid range, Hyundai continues with the 1.6-liter turbo hybrid engine. Current outputs stand at an impressive 230ps, mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. While the specs suggest spirited performance, the real boon here is efficiency. The combination of petrol and electric assistance seeks to optimize fuel economy and reduce emissions. But, if there’s a drawback, it’s that hybrids, in general, may not provide the electric range some eco-conscious consumers desire, which brings us to the plug-in option.

The Santa Fe’s plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant also harnesses the 1.6-liter turbo petrol engine. The current model has a 13.8kWh battery that touts a commendable 36-mile pure electric range. If whispers are to be believed, Hyundai might bless the 2024 model with a larger battery, possibly pushing that range further.

Launch Date

Hyundai has not given a specific date for the launch, indications are that the UK will see the Santa Fe roll into dealerships in the first half of 2024. Given the usual trends, a launch closer to summer seems plausible.

Now, onto the crucial bit – the price. The outgoing Santa Fe model starts around £43,000. But considering the advancements and tweaks made to the 2024 model, a slight increase is anticipated. Our estimate places the starting price of the new Santa Fe around £50,000. While this is certainly a bump up, it’s important to remember that prices often reflect the enhancements, features, and technology the car packs. The new Santa Fe is expected to come loaded, offering value for every pound spent.
