Performance

The Leon comes with a choice of three turbocharged petrol engines and three diesels. The 1.4 litre petrol is smooth, punchy and pacey while the 1.2 also offers capable speed.

For diesel fans, the 1.6 is flexible without having to work hard. The 178bhp 1.8 petrol brings higher performance as does the 2.0 diesel in the FR version which has 181bhp and records 0-62mph in just 7.5 seconds. The Leon is a sporty car which also offers comfort. The MQB platform cuts the Leons weight by 90kg and 10 per cent more aerodynamic than the last model making it a lot more fuel efficient. The 1.6 TDI Ecomotive returns an impressive average fuel consumption of 74.3 mpg and emits just 99g/km of CO2 making it very cheap to run.

The entry level 1.2 TSI engine also gets a respectable 57.6mpg and emits 114g/km. The Leon fair well against its competitors with a price tag that is 10 per cent cheaper.
