Hyundai Ioniq 9: A New Flagship Electric SUV Set for 2025

Hyundai has officially unveiled the Ioniq 9, a new seven-seat electric SUV that will serve as the brand’s flagship model. Based on the E-GMP platform, shared with the Kia EV9, the Ioniq 9 promises long-range capability, rapid charging, and a spacious interior. It is expected to arrive in Korea and the US in early 2025, followed by a UK and European launch later in the year.

Performance and Powertrain Options

At launch, the Ioniq 9 will be available with three powertrain options, all featuring a 110.3kWh battery:

  • Long-Range RWD: 215bhp, 372-mile range, 0-62mph in 9.4 seconds
  • Long-Range AWD: 309bhp, 346-mile range, 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds
  • Performance AWD: 429bhp, 317-mile range, 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds

All models have a 124mph top speed. Hyundai has not yet announced a high-performance N version, but the Performance AWD trim will serve as the top-spec model for now.

Range, Charging, and Efficiency

The Ioniq 9 features an 800-volt electrical system, allowing for fast charging speeds of up to 240kW. Hyundai claims that a 10-80% charge takes just 24 minutes on a compatible charger.

The rear-wheel-drive version offers the longest range at 372 miles, while the all-wheel-drive models trade efficiency for additional power and traction. The Performance AWD model has the lowest estimated range at 317 miles.

Design and Exterior Features

Hyundai continues its approach of giving each Ioniq model a distinct design. The Ioniq 9 follows this philosophy with a sleek, aerodynamic shape that is more rounded than the boxy Kia EV9.

  • Front end: Features a pixel-style lighting signature, although UK models will not receive the full-width light bar due to regulations.
  • Side profile: Features aerodynamic surfacing to improve efficiency, with wheel sizes ranging from 19 to 21 inches.
  • Rear design: The tapered rear shape is inspired by a boat tail, with a Volvo-like pixel lighting setup wrapping around the tailgate.

Interior and Technology

The Ioniq 9’s cabin focuses on space and comfort, with seating for six or seven passengers:

  • Dual 12-inch displays provide infotainment and driver information.
  • Physical climate controls remain, along with rotary dials for temperature adjustment.
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard.
  • Sustainable materials, including recycled PET fabric and bio-based paint, are used throughout the interior.

For those opting for the six-seat layout, the second-row captain’s chairs can swivel 180 degrees to face the rear seats, enhancing passenger interaction. The first and second rows also offer reclining “relaxation seats” for added comfort.

Practicality and Boot Space

The Ioniq 9 is a large SUV, slightly longer than the Kia EV9, measuring 5,060mm in length:

  • Seven-seat configuration: 620 litres of boot space.
  • Five-seat configuration: 1,323 litres of boot space.
  • Folded rear seats: Expected to exceed 2,000 litres of storage.
  • Frunk (front trunk): 88 litres in RWD models, 52 litres in AWD models.

Safety and Driver Assistance Features

Hyundai has equipped the Ioniq 9 with a reinforced body structure and 10 airbags. Advanced safety technologies include:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 2
  • Lane-Keeping Assist
  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Driver-Attention Warning
  • Safe-Exit Warning

Expected Pricing and Rivals

Hyundai has not yet announced UK pricing, but the Ioniq 9 is expected to start at around £65,000, aligning it with the Kia EV9. A top-spec Performance AWD model in Calligraphy trim could reach £85,000.

Rivals include:

  • Kia EV9 (similar platform and powertrain)
  • Volvo EX90 (premium electric SUV alternative)
  • Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB (more van-like practicality)
  • Mercedes EQE SUV and BMW iX (for buyers seeking a premium badge)

Launch Timeline

The Hyundai Ioniq 9 will go on sale in Korea and the US in early 2025, with UK and European deliveries expected later in the year
