Volkswagen has revealed its new Up! city car, the awkwardly-monikered successor the Volkswagen Lupo and the Volkswagen Fox.
The new Volkswagen Up! was revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week and will go on sale in Europe in December this year.
Volkswagen has been lacking a genuine small car contender to compete with the likes of the Fiat 500 and Mini. As a result, the Up! comes in three different specifications ranging from the entry-level Take Up! to the top-spec High Up!
The compact car measures just 3.54 metres by 1.64 metres and as a result is designed for city use. The Volkswagen Up! is capable of seating four and boasts a 251-litre boot.
Due to the size of the car, Volkswagen will offer a range of frugal engines. The Volkswagen Up! is the first to feature a new range of three-cylinder petrol engines.
Available in 60PS and 75PS versions, the Volkswagen Up! will be one of the most efficient small cars on the market. Both engines should offer CO2 emissions under the 100g/km mark, which would mean free road tax and exemption from the London congestion charge in the UK.
Volkswagen also plans to introduce an all-electric version of the small car in future but details of the potential electric model are still unclear.
The Volkswagen Up! comes in a choice of exterior and interior colours along with some exciting new technology such as a laser-guided City Emergency Braking system capable of stopping the car at low speeds if it detects an object in the way.
