The Renault Fluence Z.E. saloon, the first all-electric car from the French car maker, will go on sale next year in the UK.
The Fluence Z.E. saloon was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2009 and is now close to its UK release in mid-2012.
The new Fluence Z.E. is aimed at people looking for an economical four door-door saloon and with the Fluence being the saloon segment's first ever electric car, it will have little competition in the UK.
With a range of just over 100 miles, the car is designed for short, city-based journeys but unlike the electric cars currently on sale, it will offer more room for families wanting to jump on the electric car bandwagon.
One of the Fluence's noticeable features is its blue tinted details which appear on its lights and fog lights, strip on the rear lights and on the Renault front and rear logos.
The blue LED is set to become Renault's signature for its electric car range and gives the car a futuristic feel.
Some of the Fluence's features include an on-board computer (which displays car battery charge and fuel consumption), integrated navigation system, Bluetooth, climate control, cruise control. Many of these features can be controlled from the steering wheel as well.
The Fluence's engine has, like most electric cars, quite a weak engine with a power of 70kW, which is equivalent to 95bhp - the criteria used for most petrol and diesel cars.
The Fluence's travelling costs are definitely reasonable. For example it will cost you approximately £3 to travel 115 miles, depending on price per kWh that is.
The benefits are obvious; the electric Fluence is road tax free and exempt from the London congestion charge due to zero CO2 emissions when it is in motion.
You can charge your electric Fluence at home and with the new Polar charging points campaign, pretty much anywhere else when you're out and about. A full charge will take between six-eight hours but fast chargers will charge the battery to around 80 per cent capacity in just 30 minutes.
The price for the Renault Fluence Z.E. is £17,850 (after £5,000 plug in car grant) on the road, but don't forget that the price of monthly battery hire - around £81 per month - must also be considered.
