Ford says that the model is the “most advanced Focus ST yet" and offers new chassis control technologies, tuned suspension and steering, and bespoke tyre specification.

In addition, the Ford Focus ST will, for the first time, be offered with a choice of two engines: one petrol and one diesel.

If you prefer a petrol model, the 247bhp 2.0-litre EcoBoost pushes the new Focus ST to a benchmark sprint time of just 6.5 seconds. Furthermore, the model will return claimed average fuel economy of 41.5mpg and emit 158g/km of CO2.

The diesel-powered Ford Focus ST features a 183bhp 2.0-litre TDCi unit, achieving 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds, while returning 64.2mpg and emitting 114g/km of CO2.

Both engines are mated to a six-speed manual transmission, with the petrol version offering a top speed of 154mph, while the diesel-fuelled model has a 135mph top speed.

The new Ford Focus ST will be available as a five-door hatchback and an estate, while three trim levels will be offered: ST1, ST2 and ST3.

Standard equipment is plentiful, with all models receiving a muscular body kit, 19-inch alloy wheels, Recaro sports seats, sports steering wheel, SYNC 2 connectivity system with high-resolution eight-inch colour touch-screen, and Adaptive Front Lighting.

The new Ford Focus ST models will be available to order in the UK from autumn 2014, with the first examples set to reach dealerships in early 2015. Pricing and further specification details will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
