Ferrari has revealed a more extreme performance version of its 458 convertible supercar, called the Speciale A.
This is essentially a folding roof version of the original Ferrari 458 Speciale, which was first revealed as a coupe last year. The ‘A’ added to the name of the convertible model stands for Aperta, which is Italian for ‘open’.
The Speciale A will be available for public viewing next month at the 2014 Paris Motor Show.
Like the Speciale coupe, the new convertible boasts extra engine power, upgraded aerodynamic features and various weight-saving measures. It’s therefore faster than a standard 458 Spider convertible and offers better handling and braking performance.
The output from the 4.5-litre V8 engine inside is increased from 562bhp to 597bhp. Power is sent to the rear wheels and the V8 is linked to a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox which works faster than the 458’s standard transmission.
The Speciale A is 50kg heavier then the coupe version of the Speciale, but compared to the regular 458 Spider its 90kg lighter.
All these changes mean that the zero to 62mph sprint time for the 458 Speciale A is recorded at just three seconds. That’s 0.4 seconds quicker than a standard 458 Spider.
Other differences compared to a standard 458 Spider revealed for the Speciale A include the racing stripes and Alcantara seats.
The fabric roof takes 14 seconds to fold in a covered recess located in front of the Ferrari’s mid-mounted V8.
Only 499 examples of the Speciale A will be built, which makes this car even rarer then the 950bhp LaFerrari hybrid supercar.
Pricing for the Ferrari 458 Speciale A convertible is currently unconfirmed. However, the Speciale coupe is priced around £20,000 more compared to the standard Ferrari 458 coupe. By that reckoning, the new Speciale A will cost around £220,000.
The 458 Speciale A represents a momentous creation by Ferrari for more than one reason. For one thing, this is expected to be the last iteration of the 458 supercar. Not only that, the Speciale A is also set to be the last Ferrari to use a naturally-aspirated V8.
For these reasons alone, the Speciale A convertible is likely to go down in history as one of the most significant cars ever made by Ferrari.
The standard Ferrari 458 Spider is currently available to order now for a price of £198,906, while the Italia coupe version is priced from £178,461.
