Vauxhall has won three green awards with the Ampera claiming two.
Vauxhall managed three awards at this year’s Next Green Car awards with the Ampera extended range electric vehicle (E-REV) leading the way.
The Ampera has long been touted as a genuine answer to range anxiety and EV feasibility with its hybrid drivetrain enabling the five-door hatchback to travel a combined total of 350 miles, around 50 of which are on electric power alone.
Those credentials, along with CO2 emissions of less than 40g/km on a combined cycle, meant the Ampera was celebrated at the awards ceremony where it won an overall gold award and a next generation prize.
“The 2011 winners reflect the latest technologies being used by manufacturers to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. Indeed, the Vauxhall Ampera wins our Gold Award 2011 as it is this year’s game changer. An electric car with no range anxiety, ultra-low emissions, state-of-the-art design and it’s a joy to drive," said Dr Ben Lane, Managing Editor of Next Green Car.
While all talk will centre on the Ampera – due to be released in the UK early next year - when Vauxhall is discussed, it wasn’t the only winner from the GM-owned brand’s stable as the Vauxhall Corsa also claimed a title in the supermini category.
The model in question was the 1.3-litre CDTi ecoFLEX which returns CO2 emissions of 94g/km – making it one of the most efficient combustion engine models in its class.
Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall’s managing director, was on hand to receive the award and he commented:
“Vauxhall is very pleased to win three accolades in the Next Green Car Awards, including a double for Ampera. The Ampera has been received with much acclaim as the only electric vehicle able to run for up to 50 miles on its battery yet extend its range without stopping to over 310 miles, still on electric power.
“With its fresh new look and even cleaner engines, the Corsa is as popular as ever, the 94g/km ecoFLEX model honoured with the supermini award is zero-rated for car tax and is congestion charge exempt," said Alred.
