The Toyota iQ city car will be exempt from the central London congestion charge after the changes announced by Boris Johnson.

The Mayor of London outlined a new Greener Vehicle Discount that allows any car with sub-100 g/km of CO₂ emissions and Euro5 compliant engines a 100 per cent discount from the charge.

Toyota’s 1.0-litre manual iQ has CO₂ emissions of 99g/km and Toyota Optimal Drive Euro5 engine and thus will be exempt from the charge.

In addition to its engine technology the iQ’s bodywork similarly aids economy and emissions. The city car has an aerodynamic packaging says Toyota, as a result of its low height, centre of gravity and wheel lay-out.

Its wheels are pushed to the absolute extremities of the cars frame, aiding stability and agility, exemplified by a 3.9 m turning circle.

The Toyota iQ joins the Prius and Auris hybrids as free to drive around London with both hybrids having CO₂ emissions 89 g/km.

There are a number of iQ alternatives that are similarly exempt from the London congestion charge including the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion, Ford Fiesta Econetic and the Citroen C3 Airdream.

The new Toyota iQ is available from £10,158.
