Toyota’s ‘Team England A’ claimed the bragging rights in the Toyota Nations Challenge after beating competition from the other home nations as well as the England B team.
The Nations Challenge took place parallel to the RAC Future Car Challenge between London and Brighton where the aim was to find a winner – the car and team with the most fuel efficient performance- from a field of five Toyota Auris’s.
Team England won the mini-event registering 72.8mpg-an improvement of 2.2mpg over the official combined cycle figure of the Auris.
In the main event the Auris hybrid also performed well, achieving the best economy among hybrid electric passenger cars in the Future Car Challenge.
The Auris is equipped with Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive that utilises its electric motor over short distances before switching to the 1.8-litre petrol engine over longer distances.
According to Toyota the hybrid system monitors driving conditions and application of the brake and accelerator to determine which powertrain is most efficient in that particular set of circumstances.
Toyota also showcased its FCHV-adv hydrogen fuel cell vehicle at the RAC event- the first time it has been seen in the UK.
The FCHV-adv is set for release in 2015 and has no by-products other than water.
