Porsche has introduced the lighter, more powerful Cayman R to the Cayman line-up.

Porsche has introduced the lighter, more powerful Cayman R to the Cayman line-up.

The original Cayman range was introduced in 2005 and the mid-engined sports coupe was well received.

Consisting of the basic Cayman and Cayman S trim levels, the range has now been expanded to include the R-badged Cayman model.

The new Cayman R weighs 55kg less than the Cayman S. It features the same 3.4-litre, Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) boxer engine found on the Cayman S but has been tuned to produce an extra 10bhp.

It is combined with a six-speed manual transmission and together they are capable of clearing 0-62mph in 5.0 seconds, while seven-speed dual-clutch PDK (Doppelkupplungsgetriebe) transmission models reduce that time 4.7 seconds.

Top speed for the manual transmission stands at 175mph while the PDK version car reach 174mph.

Porsche says the Cayman R was produced for ‘one reason: pure, distilled, driving dynamics’ with the main objective being a reduction in weight.

To achieve this Porsche has used lightweight components in the Cayman R while also stripping back equipment levels. This means the Cayman R goes without air conditioning and a stereo, and a slightly smaller 54-litre fuel tank than the Cayman S and a lowered chassis.

In addition lightweight materials are used on the door skins and interior panels, carbon fibre is used for the bucket seats and lightweight alloys first used on the Boxster Spyder are added to further reduce weight.

The German sports car maker has also fitted the Cayman R with a Cayman Aerokit including a fixed rear spoiler, black-framed halogen headlights as well as decorative ‘Porsche’ side-stripes.

Traditionally Porsche has retained the R moniker for its special racing models, the most iconic of which is the 1967 911 R.

The Cayman R goes on sale in the UK in February 2011 with prices starting at £51,731.

Included in the price is a Driving Experience Programme at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone.
