Mitsubishi has announced that the i-MiEV electric city car is now on sale in 15 European countries.
Production for the mass-produced EV began in October with around 2,500 units built and shipped out.
The Japanese manufacturer has invested a massive amount of time and money into the small EV. Only 200 right-hand drive models are destined for the UK at present however the i-MiEV will be eligible for the government’s Plug-In Car Grant bringing the price of the electric Mitsubishi down to £23,990.
It has been on sale in Japan since last July and demand has outstripped supply so far. By the end of 2010 Mitsubishi had sold its entire production run of 1,400 units and received 900 orders to boot.
The i-MiEV will go up against the other flagship EV in the form of the Nissan Leaf hatchback.
Facts and figures are almost identical between the two heavyweight EVs with ranges of 93 miles for the i-MiEV and 100 miles for the Leaf. Similarly there is a price difference of £500 between the two with the Mitsubishi coming in slightly more expensive.
The 15 lucky countries to receive the Mitsubishi are some of the major movers in the European car market with the UK, France, and Germany all selling the electric city car from today.
Despite missing out on the first shipment, Serbia, Finland, Slovenia and Turkey have all requested the i-MiEV for their home markets.
Mitsubishi is hoping its popularity is transferred to sales as well as initial curiosity.
