The new Mini Countryman model range, including the first ever four-wheel drive Mini, will cost between £16,000 and £18,810, it was announced today.

The Mini Countryman comes in five trim levels, including One, Cooper, Cooper S, One D and Cooper D. The SUV crossover will go on sale in the UK on 18 September 2010.

Designed as a soft off-roader capable of parking in fields or driving on the beach, the Countryman is larger than the three other Mini models.

The boot is also larger, with 350-litres of space available with the seats up and 1,170-litre with the rear seats folded.

A first for Mini, the Cooper D and Cooper S ALL4 models will be four-wheel drive, with a Cooper version due in 2012. The ALL4 system itself detects when there is front wheel slip and engages drive to the rear wheels to improve traction.

The Countryman is designed to carry luggage such as bicycles and surfboards via a multifunction rack. The car features four wide opening doors and can seat up to five adults.

There will be a choice of three petrol and two diesel engines. The diesel units are the same as the Hatch, Convertible and Clubman models in the Mini range, while the petrol engines consist of 1.6-litre power plants.

The largest ever Mini will be available in the UK on 18 September.
