We’ve mentioned Beaulieu before. It was one of our favourite haunts when we were younger, and gave us our first real foray into the automotive industry.
It seems like we weren’t the only ones captivated by the history hidden in the New Forest. Martin Scorsese, along with Lord Richard Attenborough and Anthony Haas, are to produce a film called ‘Silver Ghost’, which details the extraordinary life of Lord John Douglas-Scott Montagu of Beaulieu.
Silver Ghost focuses on Lord John’s relationship with his wife, Cis, and his secret love affair with his secretary and mistress, Eleanor Velasco Thornton. Silver Ghost also chronicles Lord John’s friendships with motoring pioneers and Rolls-Royce founders Charles Rolls and Henry Royce, and British artist and sculptor Charles Sykes.
Rolls Camera... Action!
Eleanor inspired the legendary Spirit of Ecstasy mascot, which was designed by Sykes, that to this very day sits atop all new cars manufactured by Rolls-Royce . Founder of the National Motor Museum, Edward (John Montagu’s son), appears nonplussed about his ancestors’ skeletons leaping out of the closet and onto the big screen. “It is a remarkable story which has long been a family secret. I am delighted that Martin Scorsese has joined Richard Attenborough and Anthony Haas in bringing it to the screen."
Lord Attenborough comments, "Martin Scorsese is a giant of the cinema and I am thrilled to be collaborating with Marty and Anthony. What a team to bring this extraordinary story to life.
“Silver Ghost is a most complex love story, not only between men and women, but men and machines. Set at the turn of the last century, it delineates the fascinating story of Charles Rolls and Henry Royce and the highly charged love affairs within the Montagu family."
A Schmuck on Wheels?
Anthony Haas says, "Silver Ghost is one of the great untold stories of the last century which Richard Attenborough and I have developed. It is a wonderful endorsement to have Martin Scorsese wanting to make this film with us and we are very much looking forward to working together."
Martin Scorsese can’t contain his excitement. "When I read the story of Silver Ghost, I was mesmerised. I immediately thought: this is a picture that has to be made. And when I was asked to come aboard as a Producer alongside Richard Attenborough and Anthony Haas, I didn't hesitate for a moment."
We’re looking forward to seeing how Hollywood treats one of the south’s most intriguing stories. We reckon Lord Attenborough will give it a ‘Downton Abbey’ vibe and cast Bella Emberg as the sultry secretary. Scorsese will then, no doubt, inject it with a little Goodfellas/Casino flair, and have Lord Montagu brapping his pistol at playa haters, you dig?
