Hyundai has released a further image of its upcoming Veloster with the teaser hinting at a hatchback bodystyle.

Undoubtedly the major talking point for the new Hyundai is the strange door layout of the vehicle. However attention is also drawn to the hatchback styling of a car that has previously been marketed as a sports coupe.

The Veloster features just one door on the driver’s side of the car, two on the passenger flank and a split rear window – as seen previously on the Honda CR-Z sports hybrid.

Hyundai is not the only manufacturer to favour this kind of door layout. MINI did the same with the Clubman however came in for heavy criticism for refusing to reverse the doors for the UK market.

The obvious implications of the decision meant passengers were forced to step into the road when using the longer door on the driver’s side.

As such there are fears that the Korean manufacturer will follow MINI’s example or whether it will make a UK model at all.

The Veloster finds itself straddling both the hatchback and sports coupe boundaries. This ‘crossover’ bodystyle has been promoted by Hyundai as a ‘bold new direction’ as opposed to anything more concrete.

The same can be said for the Veloster’s drivetrain which is yet to be confirmed, however Hyundai is expected to plump for the 1.6-litre direct-injection petrol engine and duel-clutch transmission that was hinted at in a teaser video released last week.

Hyundai will unveil the Veloster on 10 January at the Detroit Motor Show.

Askaprice.com holds a range of new cars at the car-buying website, the holdings include Honda CR-Z business lease deals as well as brand new MINI models.
