Marking 25 years of the BMW M5 the company has created a one-off special edition for the track which draws on its historic CSL models for inspiration.

The regular M5 V10 has been increased in capacity from 5 to 5.5 litres and, although no official figure has been released, the BMW M-Sport head of development was talking about this particular M5 as having around 580bhp and 400lb/ft of torque. Being designed for the track the anniversary edition of the car weighs around 50kg less than normal, thanks to a carbon fibre roof and a stripped out interior.

With all that power on tap the M5 uses a seven-speed Getrag double clutch transmission, modified from the existing M3. Existing BMW M5 owners will be delighted to hear that the standard suspension is considered to be well up to the job of keeping this racing model on the track. It looks as though this incarnation of the M5, complete with a paint job evocative of the early CSL, will remain a one-off, though a new M5 is set to be created by BMW.
