German powerhouse BMW will launch a new engine for the Z4 roadster at the New York Auto Show later this month and it will be the most efficient and economical in its history.
The new 2.0-litre unit is a four-cylinder petrol drivetrain called the Z4 sDrive 28i and registers a maximum output of 240bhp.
It incorporates a range of technology previously seen on the powerful engine of the BMW X1 xDrive 28i in the form of a TwinPower Turbocharger. It uses high precision injection as well as a turbocharger with two exhaust ducts to reduce waste energy.
The changes to the engine allows for an increase in torque and performance as well as an improvement in fuel consumption and emissions, in comparison to the current sDrive 30 unit found on the Z4.
BMW is yet to release the final emissions and performance data of the new engine however they are expected to be revealed closer to its release date, rather than its debut in New York.
The most recent Z4 has been on the market since 2009 and it has incorporated a range of EfficientDynamic features already.
The latest engine is a further development of BMW’s economic signature which already boasts brake energy regeneration, lightweight construction processes and a shift indicator.
