Audi has opened the order books for its newest A1 derivative – the most powerful in the sub-compact hatchback's range.
The new A1 1.4-litre TFSI 185bhp is available from £20,705 and benefits from the combined abilities of a supercharger that is used at low end revs and a turbocharger that takes over from around 3,500rpm.
Audi is quick to point out that its new A1 does not lose the efficient figures that it has been praised for with the new drivetrain returning 47.9mpg and CO2 figures of 139g/km.
The potent petrol engine is mated to a seven-speed twin-clutch transmission that channels power to the front wheels while its seventh gear works to reduce fuel consumption.
The new A1 retains the S line suspension arrangement seen on the current A1 sport model which means a taut feel and firm handling while control is looked after by a new ESP program which electronically applies the brakes to the wheels that require it.
In terms of specification, the new A1 lifts the majority of its finishes and styling from the S-line model including part-leather upholstery and alloy wheels while equipment includes a Driver’s Information system and Bluetooth connectivity with a 6.5-inch retractable display for multimedia outlets.
The Audi A1 recently scooped the prestigious What Car? car of the year award, cementing its place as one of the most desirable cars for 2011.
