Best new family 4x4’s
There are times in life when any man or woman just needs to take a car, and family, off road and through a muddy field and whilst these times may be few and far between you’d be best advised to make sure you’re in a 4x4 when you do it, if only to outrun angry cows.
In reality 4x4’s provide the ideal solution for families who occasionally have to navigate tricky terrain on the odd occasion whilst offering maximum road going comfort and a large cabin, sometimes with 7 seats, to seat the family and luggage/shopping in comfort.
You’ll not be short of choice when picking you’re next family 4x4 but to make it a little easier, here’s our pick of the bunch:
Our top new family 4x4’s:
New Land Rover Discovery 4x4
The iconic Land Rover Discovery remains today one of the best 4x4’s on the market, improving with every new model. The latest Land Rover Discovery offers families an extremely comfortable cabin with optional seating for 7 and trim and equipment levels to suit every need as well as excellent engines including a superb 3.0-litre diesel V6. As you’d expect the Land Rover is extremely comfortable off-road, with four-wheel drive that can be altered to suit the terrain, but you’ll also find it a comfortable cruiser on tarmac.
New Volvo XC90 4x4
The Volvo XC90 offers the upmost in comfort and with generous equipment levels and 7 seats as standard it’s not hard to see why it’s become a very popular family 4x4 since its launch. The interior is large and comfortable and well appointed and the XC90’s refined ride makes it the ideal place to be on long journeys as well as off-road. The XC90 is available with a choice of either an excellent 2.4-litre diesel engine or equally impressive 3.2-litre petrol engine.
New Hyundai Santa Fe 4x4
The Hyundai Santa Fe may not be a car you’d expect in a list of top 4x4’s but in reality there are few better on the market today, particularly for families. The Santa Fe is available with a 7-seat option and the cabin is extremely well appointed and comfortable and the equipment levels are excellent throughout the range. The Santa Fe is available with an excellent 2.2-litre diesel engine and 2 trim levels, Premium and Style.
New Audi Q5 4x4
The Audi Q5 may not be as big as previously mentioned 4x4’s in this list but what you sacrifice in sheer size and 2 seats (the Q5 has 5 seats), you gain in driving performance - the Q5 is more comfortable on road than off and drives and handles like a much smaller vehicle. The reality is that the Audi Q5 remains as practical as any other 4x4 and has a comfortable and well appointed cabin with tremendous equipment levels available across all trim levels and a big boot. You’ll also find an excellent range of engines available, particularly the diesels which offer economy and fine performance.
New Skoda Yeti 4x4
The Skoda Yeti isn’t your typical 4x4, offering a very compact vehicle, closer to a hatchback, with the capability and practicality of a 4x4. Its clever shape means that whilst the Yeti is compact it has a very comfortable cabin and big luggage space making it ideal for families. Whilst the Yeti isn’t going to be too comfortable scaling the side of a big hill you’ll find the 4x4 very useful on slightly tricky terrain and muddy tracks. The Yeti 4x4 is available with an excellent 2.0-litre diesel engine. If you’re not looking for something huge but comfortable and practical then the Yeti may prove to be the next family 4x4 for you.
