Ford Galaxy – Larger multi purpose vehicle that handles like a car
The latest Galaxy from Ford is aimed at new car buyers looking for a larger multipurpose vehicle, but with a good turn of speed and that still drives like a car. Ford seems to have got it right with this one – the 145bhp two litre four cylinder turbo diesel engine effortlessly propels what is in effect a fairly heavy family car to a maximum of 120 miles per hour, after having reached sixty two miles per hour in a respectable time of 9.9 seconds, if called on to do so. This popular new Ford car comes with a veritable galaxy of gadgets, and a plethora of space age trim that has you half expecting to see Captain Kirk looking in at the window as you fly past.
Technology
The capacious new Ford car is available in three levels of trim. The entry level Edge has air-con, electric windows and mirrors, stereo cd with steering wheel controls, remote locking and power steering. Buyers looking for an even better equipped new car may prefer the climate control, electric driver seat and parking sensors fitted to the Zetec. However the additional luxuries supplied with the Ghia, including follow me headlights, automatic wipers and cruise control may be enough to tip the scales in favour of the most luxurious Ford Galaxy on sale today.
Safety
It's hardly surprising that this well set out new Ford car scored maximum points with NCAP, given the full house of safety gear fitted a standard. The seven airbags are complemented by window bags extending right to the rear of the new car, there's advanced pedal and steering wheel protection, and you can even deactivate a passenger airbag when using the isofix car seat mounting points that are also supplied as standard on the Ford Galaxy.
Design
The upside to the boxy shape of this generously proportioned new Ford car is good head and leg room throughout – just remember the bum seats are strictly for kids. Some may find that the firm padding on the individually adjustable rear seats takes a little while to get used to, however this characteristic is hardly noticeable on the motorway, which is this new car's true home. Minimum boot size is 308 litres, meaning that you can forget about taking a family of seven away for anything more than a short weekend. Folding away the bum seats increases the carrying capacity to 435 litres, and if you do the same with the middle row you'll expand your new car to van size capacity of 2,325 litres of flat load space.
Performance
The new Ford Galaxy is available in a range of two petrol and three diesel alternatives. The smooth, quiet and effective petrol derivatives include 2.0 litre 145bhp and 2.3 litre 161bhp offerings, of which only the larger can be mated to an automatic gearbox. Company drivers in search of a practical new car are more likely to opt for either the 1.8 litre 100bhp or 125bhp diesel variants, as either of these provide superior pulling power under full load, plus a better marriage of economy and performance. The most exciting choice has to be the 2.2 litre 175bhp diesel which can get to 62mph in 9.1 seconds and reach 120mph. On the open road the Galaxy is about as nimble as a conventional sedan, with little body roll thanks to the firm suspension and esp stability control. The steering is well balanced at high speeds, but also light enough when manoeuvring into tight parking spaces – thanks to the excellent power steering fitted as standard to this useful new Ford car.
