Ford Fiesta – Small new cars don't come much better

The latest Ford Fiesta seems set to banish forever the cheap and nasty image created by the boring new cars that originally bore the name. The state of the art exterior and interior design is coupled to a wide range of engine and transmission choices to suit all tastes. Beneath the flowing lines of this new Ford car are a number of impressive technological improvements, ranging from the latest safety features to advanced ride engineering. The cabin is roomy and well thought out, making the Fiesta more of a driver's car than you might have thought.

Technology

The designers put in their best efforts to squeeze as much affordable technology into the new Fiesta – much of it poached from more up-market companions in the Ford new car line-up. The entry level Stable is fitted with power assisted adjustable steering, electric mirrors, central locking and cd, while the Style adds better sound, power front windows and remote locking to the new Ford car. If you want to add even more style like air-con and heated screen, go for the Style+. If this version is still not good enough for you, take the plunge and splash out on the popular Zetec, which grabs attention in every crowd with its alloys, fogs, shiny chrome grill and enhanced detailing inside. The only Fiesta still left to look at would be the ultra sporty Ford Ka Zeta S, which has all the goodies a boy racer could desire.

Safety

This exciting smaller new Ford car deserves its five NCAP stars plus full level four rating for child protection. All models boast dual airbags to the front and side, plus knee level driver protection. Every passenger in the new car benefits from pre –tensioned three point belts, and Ford have remembered junior with an isofix child mount station. You can add front and side curtains to make your new car even safer, if you wish.

Design

The Ford Fiesta is a people's car that was designed with the comfort of its passengers in mind. Leg and head room is good - and the well engineered seats, combined with well suppressed engine, wind and road noise, make for a comfortable journey for passengers enjoying the air-con and excellent sound system provided on this fine new Ford car. Unfortunately Ford missed a beat on the storage side - the high boot lip and lack of folding rear seats detract from what is otherwise an exceptionally well thought through new car.

Performance

Neither the kick-in 1.25 litre 60bhp or 82bhp petrol engines available with this new Ford car are capable of feeding much energy through the manual box. So, unless you're a little old lady on the way to Church on Sunday, you'd be better off going for either the 1.4 litre 96bhp version (the only model available with auto) - or perhaps even the sporty 1.6 litre which, although not yet a boy racer, pushes out a respectable 120bhp. On the diesel side you can choose from a 1.4 or a 1.6 litre engine for your new car, the latter also available in the econetic conversion, that is so economical that you can bank your road taxes. This fine new offering from Ford is an easy driving car with impeccable manners in town and on the open road. Drivers of all ages will enjoy the excellent forward visibility over the good looking dashboard – but they'll have to be careful when reversing their new Ford car, as the view out the back is definitely not in the same league.
