BMW X1 – Stylish smaller cross-over for the younger set

The new BMW X1 is a small cross-over utility vehicle that's equally at home on the motorway, around town, or in moderate off-road conditions. It's definitely no slouch either – that's provided you aren't looking for a fast saloon, which it isn't. You can choose from a number of diesel options when buying your new BMW car too, ranging from the super-economical through to the mildly sporty. Overall the BMW X1 should be a serious contender for the wallets of new car buyers in search of an economical and stylish new BMW car.

Technology

The new BMW X1 is in many ways a one-size-fits-all SUV in that all versions of the new car come with a similar set of technical wizardry that includes 17 inch alloys on run-flat tyres, dynamic stability control, front fog lights, electric windows, twin zone aircon, reach-and-rake multipurpose steering wheel, and a few more bits besides. The X-Drive 18d and 20d variants add hill descent control, while the top line X-Drive 23d benefits from a six speed automatic gearbox, ambient lighting and auto-dim mirror – plus different alloys and exterior chrome trim just to make sure the rest of the mob notices the differences that came with your new BMW car.

Safety

This practical new BMW car received a well deserved five stars from NCAP thanks to the full pack of safety features fitted to the X1 as standard, including six airbags, isofix mounts at the back, seatbelt pre-tensioners, and brake force display. You'll also find rear parking sensors on your new car, useful if you want to avoid dinging the back bits of your smart new BMW car.

Design

Although really a four seater, the BMW X1 is capable of accommodating a fifth passenger providing the free ride makes up for the presence of the high central tunnel on the floor. That aside, the cabin on the new car feels roomy and there's reasonable head and legroom all round. Generally low sound penetration levels are spoiled by wind noise at high speed – an oversight not expected from BMW. Although the motorway ride is excellent some may find bumpy roads a tad hard. There's no problem with boot space in the BMW X1 though – you get a readily accessible 420 litres before folding down the split rear seats, plus an additional handy compartment under the boot floor of the new BMW car

Performance

There are four variants to the BMW X1, all using the same two litre diesel motor. The 143 bhp entry level two wheel drive s-Drive makes the 62mph dash in 9.6 seconds, while returning excellent overall fuel economy The other three versions of this versatile new BMW car all benefit from four wheel drive which is great – but take care too; the bigger engines trade economy for power. The top of the range supercharged X-Drive 23d uses its 240bhp to get to 62mph in an 7.3 seconds, which is quite acceptable given the overall design concept. Although theoretically an off-roader, the new BMW X1 still manages to perform pretty much like a saloon on good roads, thanks to the advanced suspension that is shares with the BMW 3 Series. It's also equally happy to do its thing in the slush or on a muddy track, should you decide to give your new car a rural thrill.
